Technical Issues - Backing Up FilmStar/Scantraq Data Files

A user reported severe difficulties after Microsoft updated his Windows 11 computer. The ..\Winfilm\Index directory had vanished and he needed to reinstall FilmStar.

So far there have been no similar reports from others. It could be that the Microsoft update caused havoc with the VIPRE security system on his computer.

My Windows 10 laptop (Norton security) was recently upgraded to Windows 11 with no issues. Probably you already back up Winfilm data directories, but if not consider the batch file shown below and uploaded here.

REM FilmStar Backup
PAUSE Start copying
XCOPY c:\Winfilm\Designs k:\Winfilm\Designs /d
XCOPY c:\Winfilm\Index k:\Winfilm\Index /d
XCOPY c:\Winfilm\Spectra k:\Winfilm\Spectra /d
PAUSE Copy completed

Change k: as appropriate. (Do not copy to the same hard drive!) In our case k: is a USB drive. Your IT department might have an opinion as to best backup practices.

Insert additional XCOPY lines as required, (..\Winfilm\Basic32 etc.). The "d" switch speeds up subsequent operations as only newer files will be overwritten. Click here for documentation for the XCOPY command.

Questions? Issues? Contact me to arrange a ZOOM session. Rather not deal with batch files? Search for "Windows backup software".  BE PREPARED! Back up your data files NOW.
